Music Overview

South Gippsland Schools Music Program

The FSC Music Program is part of the SGSMP which comprises four other schools, Korumburra SC, Leongatha SC, Mirboo North SC and Wonthaggi SC.  It aims to provide quality instrumental, classroom and ensemble music education instruction to secondary school students in the South Gippsland region.

It is hard to find a subject within the curriculum that introduces and reinforces so completely such benefits as self-discipline, self-reliance, responsibility, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, respect and creativity. Not only does music study provide for these essential personal qualities, but also helps to encourage group dynamics, physical development, a sense of personal, group and community achievement and mental coordination.

The cooperative nature of the program enables students to receive tuition from specialist instrumental teachers.  Staff travel between schools, thereby sharing their skills with a wide selection of students. The five schools are committed to ensuring Music Departments are housed in appropriate facilities and to promoting the substantial achievements of the musicians in their schools.

The SGSMP coordinates inter-school events where students from across the five schools can combine- sharing their skills with one another at festivals, concerts and workshops.

Each school coordinates a calendar of musical events such as mid-year concerts, participation at band festivals and competitions, tours, fundraising events which are spread across the year.

Ensemble Music

Foster Secondary College has a vibrant and expanding ensemble music program.  It consists of 3 concert bands, 1 stage band and numerous small ensembles.  Attendance of at least one large ensemble is compulsory for instrumental music students and additional participation in smaller ensembles is encouraged.

The FSC ensembles are active and regularly participate in tutorials and workshops with ensembles from other schools.  Concerts occur throughout the year and include the ‘Blooming Beginners’ (Junior Concert Band) Debut Concert, Mid-Year Showcase, End-of-Year Showcase and multiple performances that combine schools from the region.

Foster Secondary College has a strong and proud tradition of performing at the Victorian School Music Festival (formerly Melbourne School Bands Festival).  It forms a highlight of the ensemble calendar and students work very hard towards obtaining the wonderful results that have consistently been achieved.
